The hardest part of an Instagram suspension is usually not the suspension itself but not knowing when it will end or of it will directly lead to a ban. This is especially true for small business owners who have no other means to reach their audience. While nobody can give a single number as to how long it takes, here is our honest answer based on what we’ve seen.
The Short Answer
It depends on what kind of suspension you have. A restriction on one feature can end in hours or days. A disabled account has no guaranteed timeline at all. Meta publishes no guaranteed review time for appeals, and the figures you see online come from third parties and personal experience, not from Instagram.
How Long Each Type of Instagram Suspension Lasts
1. Temporary action blocks and feature restrictions
Restrictions on posting, Stories, location sharing, or Live are the shortest. They commonly clear within a few hours to a few days, and Instagram sometimes shows the end date in the notice. If it does, trust it over any general rule. We cover the specific cases in banned from posting on Instagram, the Instagram Story ban, and the Instagram Live ban.
2. Security locks
A lock is resolved as soon as you complete verification, which can be nearly immediate. It stays unresolved, and can escalate, if verification fails or you keep retrying.
3. Disabled accounts and appeals
This is where timelines vary most. The only figure that looks official is from 2020, when Instagram’s disabled-account screens indicated a review generally takes up to a day. Current third-party estimates range from 24 hours to a couple of weeks, and community reports include far longer waits with no response. Treat all of these as rough, because none of them is a promise. In a ban wave, reviews can slow down further.
4. Permanent bans
A permanent ban has no end date. It usually follows repeated or serious violations, or a rejected appeal.
What Makes an Instagram Suspension Last Longer
A few things stretch the wait.
- Appealing through several routes at once.
- Submitting inconsistent verification details
- Having little for the reviewer to act on, as in a ban with no clear reason, can lengthen it.
- Repeated login attempts during a lock can push a temporary restriction into something worse.
How to Shorten the Wait
- Read the notice for a stated end date.
- File one clear appeal, from the login screen if the option is there.
- Complete verification once and accurately.
- Check the inbox tied to the account. And if there’s an appeal window, don’t let it lapse. When Instagram introduced the in-app review flow, the notice gave 30 days, so check yours and act early.

When Waiting Isn’t Enough
If a restriction hasn’t lifted after the period stated in the notice, or an appeal has gone unanswered for much longer than you expected, check that the appeal actually went through. Look at the email tied to the account, confirm any verification was accepted, and see whether the message says you can request another review.
Meta says only that it will tell you whether another review is possible, and sources disagree on whether repeat appeals help or reset your place in the queue. So escalate once, deliberately, rather than filing again and again. A long Instagram suspension is usually a sign the case needs a different route, not more of the same request.
Plan for the Waiting Period
Since nobody can promise when an account returns, a business should plan for the gap. Move urgent announcements to email (very important that you have built an email list), another platform, or your website. Tell customers where else to find you. Pause anything scheduled through the account. The longer the account is gone, the more it matters that your audience isn’t only on Instagram.
